Ulos or ulos cloth is a fabric that is shaped like a shawl. This fabric has an important role for the life of the Batak people. Ulos is one of the unique cultural heritage of the archipelago developed by the Batak tribe, North Sumatra. Initially, ulos only functioned to warm the body. In the Batak culture, the term 'mengulosi' is known. This means warming the body using ulos. In invoking any rules that must be obeyed, it is known that only to promote based on emptiness. Ulos cloth is removed by black, red and white. This fabric is usually woven with silver or gold threads. That said, there are certain types of ulos that are believed to have magical elements and are considered sacred. Currently there are many types of ulos given by the Batak tribe. The types are, for example, ulos the tolu tuho, ulos rujjat, ulos suri-suri, ulos ragi, the life of the accompaniment, the protection of yeast, ulos sadum, and many other types of ulos.

Ulos the tolu tuho is only used as a woman's scarf or headband. Rujjat Ulos is only used by well-known people or rich people, and ulos suri is commonly used as sabe-sabe.

Ulos ragi idup mangiring has a pattern that goes hand in hand. Ulos like this symbolize agreement and fertility. Usually, ulos idup mangiring is given by a cake as ulos parompa for his grandson. For the Batak people, ulos cloth is an important part of Batak traditional rituals. If in a traditional ceremony ulos is not used when the ceremony of death, birth, marriage, and other ceremonies, the ceremony is invalid.
